Mountain Man Museum
June 25, 2021
Getting an early start doesn’t do any good if you lallygaging around getting to your destination.
We were going to do a hike this morning but did quite a bit exploring on the way up the mountain to the trail head. The parking lot was almost full, including a charter bus of some kind, so we decided to skip the hike for today and do it at another date.
Coming down off the mountain we stopped at the Mountain Man Museum. Now before I talk about that, yesterday we stopped in the Tourist Information Booth in Pinedale WY, let me tell you, the girl working there wouldn’t let us leave until we had a stack of maps and brochures that must have been an inch thick. We weren’t interested in some of the stuff but we let her do her speal.
One of the things we were interested in seeing was the Museum. I was impressed with the size and amount of stuff they had there.
What I was not impressed with the low lights and small text that on the back wall of most of the glass enclosed display cases, it was hard to impossible for me to read. What I did manage to read was very informative. They had good, long, informative write ups, after reading a few I just gave up straining my eyes. That aside, I’m glad we stopped in, it’s run by the Historical Society.
Sadly we’re going to miss it, each year in July they have Rendezvous days, the brochure make it look like a good time, they do this because six of the 16 summer Rendezvous (1833, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1839, 1840) were held here at the confluence of Horse Creek and the Green River. Which is just a few miles from here, it’s on the agenda to check out.

We have decided to stay here until July 5. We’ll be off the grid with no electric and will need to add water from time to time. We will also need to go to the dump station, on site, to empty the tanks. We decided to stay here because we had some concerns about finding a place to stay over the 4th and the weather is suppose to be really comfortable with most days sunny and in the 70’s and low 80’s with nights in the 40’s, I did see 2 nights at 39.
After a brief rain shower in the late afternoon we had a really pretty rainbow, while if was not a colorful as when I first noticed it, it moved slowly and was visible for probably an hour. Before the rain we also had a couple of pronghorns just across from us.
