Thousand Springs State Park
June 16 2021
After moving 164 mostly expressway miles, we’re now in the small town of Wendell ID and have moved out of the truck farming areas along the states border, here it’s mostly corn and this is also a large dairy area with several very large dairy farms.
Today we went to Thousand Springs State Park, which is actually 5 parks under that heading. Anyway it was bright and sunny and to HOT for my taste at around 85 with very low humidity.
However our first stop was actually the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, which turns out was nothing, the only fossils were in town in the closed visitors center, but in the area where the fossils were dug we did run across portions of the Oregon trail where they had to navigate up a hill.
No snakes but did run across 3 rather large lizards.
Of the state park units we visited one we did’t find, it was nothing we were interested in anyway and one was closed. They are all along the Snake River and it’s tributaries. Very deep gorges that go straight down, I think along the Snake River from the top to the river it’s a 350 feet in the area of Niagara Springs Unit.
Lots of springs and water here but if a field is not irrigated everything is brownish, don’t know why because many different places the water just gushes out of the side of the hill and it is called the Thousand Springs area.
