What a fantastic day!!
5/23/2021
No Bigfoot sightings but we are sure in some Prime Bigfoot habit . A zillion miles of humgous old growth trees, cold mountain streams. A fair amount of SNOW in the higher elevations.
Over all we walked about 6 miles today, well over what we have done for the last couple of years.
We were in Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. Yesterday arriving we should see the snow caped mountain tops, today they are hidden in the low clouds. I’m sure Bigfoot is up there with his fog machine creating the fog so he can spy on me using his fog penetrating binoculars. Rain in the forecast for this afternoon.
Our first hike of the day was about a mile down an old road bed, about then we met some people and they told us where we could actually find the falls, Rocky Brook Falls. I passed up the parking spot for the falls by a couple of miles. It didn’t matter it was a great walk alongside a fast moving stream, that we could hear but were just far enough away that we could just catch a glimpse every now and then. The tags on the big tree said born in 1570 Died in 2020 = 450 years of age.
From the correct parking area it was an easy walk to the falls, but because the valleys are pretty narrow and the mountains are steep and tree covered, is’s hard to see the tops of the falls without looking straight up, or doing some rock climbing and getting wet in the process to get a good view of the entire falls. Mary told me that if I broke a leg, climbing on rocks, it would really ruin her day.
Next up was Dosewallips State Park along, Dabob Bay, it was low tide so we were able walk out a good long ways.
Then it was more back road exploring and another falls, this time it was Murhut Falls. The sign said it was a .8 mile hike, according to Mary’s app thingy it was a little longer than that, with a 1000 foot elevation gain, it sure felt like it was more than that tooooo, but it was a nice wide trail and mostly it was an easy walk. Again no way to see the entire falls, there were a couple of smaller falls below the one big one with no easy way down, gravity would help you get to the bottom of the ravine but surviving the fall and climbing back up might prove to be a bit of a challenge.
