We stopped early today, it was NOT a fun drive. I don’t really mind driving through road construction but driving on the expressway, on what was some kind of temporary pavement, in the right lane, was a little nerve wracking. For some reason I din’t find it a relaxing driving in this narrow lane right next to a concrete barricade while the poorly paved lane was trying to alternate between bouncing us off the concrete barrier or tossing us in the left lane, where all the big trucks were zooming by.
Then shortly after exiting the expressway we drove several more miles of construction. A portion of this would have been much safer if they had a flagger and only had one lane as it was I was driving between barrels on both sides of me, the oncoming traffic was on the right side, they had barrels on one side and a ditch on the other side, both lanes were extremely narrow.
Even with all the construction I managed to drive a little over 200 miles AND we filled up with diesel fuel.
I probably would have driven a few more miles but between construction and rural roads there just wasn’t anyplace to pull off the road for any breaks. Even at the Loves truck stop there was no place to park, all the spots were back in and we can’t back up with the jeep attached.

We drove 254 miles today, along with a change of plans. As mentioned in an earlier post we’ve been heading east and north so we could get with in a days drive, 600 miles, to Louisville for a Dr. appointment, the plan was to leave RUBY, probably rent a car, drive to Louisville spend the night and drive back.
Well, as things go, Mary had called a couple of days ago to see if the appointment was going to be in person or video? Just as we crossed the Texas Louisiana state line the office finally called back and said the visit was going to be video. No need to continue on east so we turned around. Now we’re in another quandary what to do and were do we go.
We have a commitment to get something worked on in RUBY in about 3 weeks, in northeastern TX, kinda where we are already, we have decided, since we’re here already to just stay in the area. More on what we’re going to have done later.
If we went further south along the Gulf coast, we would need to just turn around and drive all the way back, it just didn’t make sense.
There are some lakes with COE (Core of Engineers) parks around here so we’re starting with spending 5 nights on Lake O the Pines.

This is a popular fishing lake, here it is the middle of winter, granted we are somewhat in the south, but the CG is over 1/2 full and all the waterside sites are booked, at least over the weekends. Talking to our neighbor , he said “where he was trying to fish, he used the number of 200, I don’t think it was that many but from our camp site, one can tell there are a lot of boats on the water fishing. Also this is not a catch and release lake, you catch it, you keep it.

We took a drive around the lake this morning. One thing we noticed on our way here and confirmed this morning, there are no signs about the lake. This was true for our drive around the lake, no signs for boat ramps or day use areas. If we hadn’t had the maps on our phone we wouldn’t have had any idea where anything was.
2 nights in a row the setting sun light show was fantastic.
