Gaule Road
12/29/2020
Around 11:00 – 11:30 we took off, very late for exploring the back country, we went bouncing around in the State Park again, what a bumpy, rough, ride, the road in is so rough I’m not sure I’m going to venture in there again. The outside of my left knee is now tender from banging on the jeep door so much, I ended up taking a jacket and using it as padding between the door and my knee.
Anyway, after bouncing around for tooth jarring mile after mile on the main road we hung a right on ASO Loop west road, this took us to Gaule Road. We let a couple of vehicles pass us, they were headed to a camping spot in the back country, the only people we encountered off the main road.
I thought there was an over look at the end of the road reaching almost the end of the road, we think, we met a vehicle coming out (vehicle # 3), they said they thought we were about a mile and 1/2 to the trailhead. We thought we were heading to an over look that we could drive to. Driving on a little further, we decided because of the time it would take to reach the end then get back out we opted to just turnaround. To think we were in probably the most desolate part of the park when we see 3 other vehicles, the most and only ones we have met off the main road.
One thing I thought about driving around, back when it was a ranch, over 300,000 acres, they had several stock water tanks, someone laid miles of steel pipe from one tank to another. Miles and miles each piece say 40 ft long screwed together, sure took a lot of work. Besides the heat and cold and at least currently every thing growing is out to stick you, they had to get the pipe up and around rocks and gully’s. I for one wouldn’t want to walk a mile to 2 off trail. I don’t know if they ever ran many cattle from what I read it was mostly sheep.
We arrived home just a little before dark, the setting sun was not fun to drive into.
80 degrees today and a Winter Storm Warning for tomorrow. UGH!!!

Meanwhile, early am, here in the FROZEN SOUTH, the wind is really blowing, it may hit 25MPH this afternoon. I think we may get around 1-2 inches of SNOW but with highs in mid 50’s so it won’t hang around long. The nights will be in the mid 20’s. While I’m not liking the cold, the region can really use the moisture, the last time it rained here was back in July that time they got 2 inches of rain. Up in the higher elevations and closer to I-10 they may get as much as 17 inches of snow. One report I read said I-10 might get shut down.
Sunrise this morning and raindrops later.

Sunrise this morning and the rest of the pictures are from our drive along FM 170, we turned around after a few miles, being by ourselves, the road was becoming covered in snow, and ZERO cell service I didn’t want to press our luck to much.
On another note – New Tricks is a British series that’s worth watching on Amazon.
