Shiloh Battlefield
11/7/2020
We’re about an hour away from the Shiloh Battlefield where in 1862, in early April (6th and 7th), over 23,000 soldiers were killed and maimed. I’m not going to write much here about it. But I will say that it’s worth the visit, maybe not as a destination but certainly you should stop if your ever in the area.
It’s free to visit the Shiloh National Military Park. The Battlefield is large and they have a bazillion markers and plaques. If you wanted to read all the plaques and see all the cannons you could easily spend 2-3 days just wandering around reading them. The Majority that I read talked about which unit or batallion was stationed where how long they were engaged.
After the battle each side did their best to find the dead but there was so much carnage and mayhem that they were still finding bodies and body parts in June.
We didn’t take any lunch with us, while we were there the place had groups of Boy Scouts everywhere. The parents and leaders were setting up to cook lunch and we kinda thought they were going to have a fundraiser, so at lunch time we headed back to the main parking area but the setup was just to feed the Boy Scouts so we drove 7 miles back to the town of Savannah TN, to get a quick bite to eat and went back to find the rest of the 20 main points of interest. The area has several miles of roads and looking across the fields and through the woods you can see the smaller plaques and cannons all around.
A few pics of the small CG we’re parked at.
