Finally able to escape Allerigyiania
11/5/2020
Mary received a clean bill of health Tuesday so it was time to get back on the road. We had mail being delivered Wednesday so we used that day to get things packed up. Actually I was expecting to need to stay another week so it was a very welcome relief with the clean bill of health.
I confess I was more than anachous to hit the road so we pulled out at around 7:30. Boy, that was kinda a mistake. You see school is back in session and I think 95% of the parents must be taking their kids to school, we pass a school when leaving Mary’s moms place. The closer to the school we got the more cars. We even had to stop on the road because traffic was backed up. Then, past the school were all the cars coming from the other direction. Is there even a need for school buses any more? From all the cars their can’t possibly be that many kids riding the bus.
Once off the country roads we jumped on I-64 west bound, until the Owensboro KY exit where we hung a left for the hills of Kentucky.
Oops – don’t forget about time zone changes – or you might find you need to kill much more time than you planned on- AGAIN. Ugh.
I ended up driving 159 miles over 5 Hours, needless to say we sat at the rest area for quite a while:) We did fill up and kill some time at the fuel stop.

Plan A Campground closed!!
Plan B Campground FULL!!
Plan C Finally – 257 miles driven Elevation 673
We pulled out of Central City KY around 8:30 for what we thought was going to be a 200 mile drive. We pull into the Merriweather Lewis Campground along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Low and Behold it’s CLOSED!!! GRRRRRRRRRR. To get to the CG we’re driving a couple miles on this super skinny winding road only to find the gates across the road, NO WARNING. No place turnaround our only option was to continue on, down this hill, on this super skinny road! About 1/2 way down, found this wide spot in the road, it was actually a parking spot for a trail or overlook, anyway a hard left, back wheels in the dirt/mud, just following other tracks:) back up the hill and on south. On doing some research it seems like all 3 CG’s on the parkway is closed.
Plan B David Crockett State Park. 16 miles from the Parkway. It’s full. UGH now what.
Plan C drive the 16 miles back to the parkway then continue for 12 more miles the opposite direction from the State Park. What I wasn’t really counting on but should have expected is the LONG hill down drop into the town and the park. Translation the extra LONG climb back to the parkway. When we leave here Mary is going to follow me back to the parkway. We pull into the park to be the second camper here, they only have 4 spots. Getting desperate we called ahead and at the time of the call there were no campers here. We were going to stay just 1 night but with 50 amp, shade, and water I think we’re going to stay 3 nights, leaving Monday. They are predicting 79 degrees here Sunday, so with the 50 amp gives us the option of running the AC if necessary. The 2 flat tires on the white coach while we were out west, both on a Sunday, have made me a little gun shy about driving on a Sunday:).
