Big Red and Hot chips where are you?
9/15/2020 – Elevation 3652
First order of business this morning was getting some groceries, unfortunately Wally World was the most accessible grocery store so we stopped in, everyone in the store had a mask on and someone outside requesting folks to put a mask on. Choke cough cough – good job Wally World.
I searched and search the store over and not a big red to be found nor a bag of Mike Sells hot chips. I mean, I walked so far up and down the isles looking for one or the other that I’m an inch shorter now, not only that but I wore holes in both of my shoes. I guess I’ll survive but I’m not sure how.
We passed the plant where they make sugar from Sugar Beets, here are a few more pictures.
We drove 99 miles this morning and most of it was on what must be the second loneliest road in Nebraska, again treeless no signs of life except for a few cows, this time we did meet a couple more cars and I was passed by 2 semi’s. And hills we climbed a pretty steep one today and went down one also.
We’re in a small city park back up to what they call a river, personally I wouldn’t consider something I can jump over a river. I’ll let you know my opinion of the train track next door in the morning.
Once we got set up we decided to take a drive over to Toadstool Geologic Park. A couple of days ago I was planning to camp there, but looking at the expected temperatures, 90+ degrees, I kinda changed my mind, there’s no water or electricity there. Then I found out that to get there would include 11 miles of washboard gravel road each direction. Well, after driving back there in the jeep I’m sure glad we didn’t try to take the motor home back there! The road was rough, not only that but had we started down it with the Motorhome, there was no place to get it turned around for a few miles once committed to the road. And then once we reached the park only 1 of the 6 sites was open, it could have just as easily been full, that would have been really bad.
It was an interesting area barren badlands, and HOT with no shade. For once the sign was correct, the trail we took was 1 mile long. Did I mention it was HOT? I felt like I had been broiled by the time we made it back to the jeep. Gimpy knee did just fine but she was very careful not to twist her knee, and it wasn’t easy hike.
