Small and insignificant
We pulled out of the Jamestown ND Walmart parking lot this morning around 7:30 for just a little under 200 mile drive with Mary driving for a short spell.
The fields along I-94 are massive, but it’s interesting to see the gigantic fields of sunflowers with their yellow flowers, contrasting nicely with green hay fields and the golden glow of the wheat fields, that most have been harvested and the straw in large round bails, just like the hay. I know very little about wheat but the wheat fields around here, the wheat stocks, are only about 8-10 inches tall and just driving down the expressway, lots of times it’s hard to tell if the wheat has been harvested or not. The picked fields are exactly the same color as the fields that needs picked.
I’m not sure what’s going on but the expressway crosses 2 small lakes, and they are in the process of raising the expressway and you can see a couple of barns that are now in the water.
As we drove west the landscape changed from pretty flat to rolling hills and now rolling hills with mounds, lumps and bumps everywhere. Many of the lumps and bumps have lumps and bumps themselves.
We’re here in the town of Dickinson ND, and it’s HOTER than I don’t know what, and it’s brutal in the sun. We broke out the reflector sheets for 2 of the windows in an attempt to keep the heat out.
Since we don’t really do reservations I wanted to get close and arrive kinda early before calling a park………… time change to Mountain time had us here real early.
A few of these long loads passed us today.
Now for some good or bad news. I think I mentioned earlier about the generator not running the A/C. Arrived here at a campground and plugged in and low and behold the A/C works, SUPER FANTASTIC NEWS WITH THE BEYOND HADES HEAT, but that means the problem is in the generator or a fuse between the generator and circuit breakers that I haven’t found yet. A new transfer switch might have been cheaper in the long run if it’s something serious with the generator.
After setting a while, and after I hunted and pecked out the above, we decided to take a drive on the Enchanted Highway to check out some metal sculptures. They are located on a small but 60MPH 2 lane highway.
Here they are.
Now these have the Jeep parked near them for size comparison.
Getting away from the expressway and slowing down, no trees, you can see for miles and miles, it doesn’t take long to realize just how small and insignificant you are.
Can you imagine back in the early 1800’s or earlier, walking for days under the brutally hot sun, cloudless sky, not a tree in sight, no water, making your way through tough tall brown prarie grass that’s waist high, sometimes taller. Then you come over a small ridge you can see a line of green in the distance. You now that means water. That line of green can still be miles away. Unlike today where the horizon is broken up with different colors of fields, roads and power lines. Anymore don’t forget about the windmills.
In a previous post we had a few pictures of the windmill blades, you don’t realize just how big those things are until your able to get close to just one blade, just something else to make you feel small and insignificant .
