The end is near – this is probably my last post
7/27/2020 Miles Driven 232 Elevation 650
This will probably be my last post ………. until sometime in August when we start traveling again. From here we’re headed back to So. Indiana with no real exploring planned between now and then.
We pulled out of Pioneer Trail Park, Gladstone MI, around 7:30 this morning. Nobody was parked close to us so I didn’t feel bad about pulling out that early. We continued back tracking until we crossed the Mackinaw Bridge.
New territory, once across the bridge we drove down the coast of Lake Huron to Campers Cove Campground, Yet another 30 amp park and hades hot. From here it’s about 6 miles from the town of Alpena MI. The drive from Mackinaw Bridge was about 90 miles along Lake Huron, but unlike driving along Lake Michigan where the lake could be seen out the window for long distances, along the Lake Huron portion, there were trees on both sides of the road with just the occasional seanic over looks. By this time I was getting tired and just wanted to get to the CG and set up so we didn’t stop at any of them.
Once we got set up and rested a bit we took a drive to town and explored Bay View Park. Overall we walked about a mile out along the breakwater that surrounds the marina. With the Great Lakes water levels up and the apparent toad strangling rain we just miss, some of the road and sidewalk were under water. The humidity was beyond high and the sun was shining brightly and I don’t think I could have been able to do the walk, however along the lake a breeze was blowing so it was doable.
Here in the Campground water was standing everywhere, our fire ring is set in an indention in the ground and it’s FULL of water.

This morning we started our day by driving up to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Like all the museums here in Michigan it’s closed so we couldn’t go up in it. I think someone lives in 1/2 of the lighthouse and have the other half as the museum. The old army jeep in the pic was not just a decoration, the guy came out and started driving it around. We just walked around and took a few pictures and hit the road. This was the furthest point of the drive so after that each mile we drove was a mile closer to home.
The next stop was the Rogers City Marina, a walk of almost a mile had us walking around the marina.
I found me a propeller and an anchor now all I need is a boat to put them on. I wonder if this one would work? I think it’s around 35-40 ft long.
Our next stop was where something strange happened. We pull up to the overlook of the words largest Limestone Mine. There was a couple there getting ready to eat their lunch, they were smart they packed a lunch, I won’t mention why we didn’t have lunch with us….. But it’s not my fault. So anyway, the gentleman starts up a conversation about the jeep, we talk for a few minutes then he asked if we had ever been to Fort Valley GA? Strange question, I couldn’t remember why that sounded familiar but I said no. he then says that’s where your Bluebird was built………………… How did he know we had a Bluebird. turns out they are also in the campground and recognized the jeep when we pulled up………. Small world.
Moving on down the road we stopped at Presque Isle lighthouse, there are actually 2 light houses here, a new and old lighthouse here. We couldn’t get to the older one, they had the road blocked off and the path from the small marina to the lighthouse was flooded. We could see it from the breakwater at the end and it was smaller than the new one. Again the walk was close to a mile. On the way home we drove through a brief but heavy downpour , only a slight sprinkle started as we pulled in at home. 2 minutes later the sun was shining bright.
