Rapid River MI
After moving about another 100 miles west on highway 2 we ended up in Vagabond RV Park. Originally we were going to stay for just 2 nights but with rain in the forecast and the weekend coming up we decided to hang out here for 4 nights total and sight see some. The weekend was part of the reason we decided to stay longer as we were giving the impression that the parks were pretty full on the weekends up here—– whats strange is, there are only 3-4 others in the park this weekend.
One days we drove down to Gladstone and Escanaba, both are waterfront towns, on lake Michigan with a light house of sorts.
Just keep scrolling down until you see THE END:)
Another day it was off to find some waterfalls. The first stop, according to google maps, it had a name but from the road there were no signs pointing the way, once we got there the small park did have a name. Rapid River Falls Park, just like it said on google maps. At the falls the Rapid River is about 20-30 ft wide and about a foot deep with 3-4 1 foot drops.
Someone local pulled up as we were leaving and they told us about a couple of other water falls down the road about 20 minutes. One of the falls we were unable to locate.
Rapid River Falls
As we were driving down the road, on a whim, I followed some signs to a boat launch, it was down this dirt road, at a Y in the road the sign pointed to a much smaller path. Following this 1 lane track we were back in there a couple of miles and I’m sure I could feel bigfoot watching me. Anyway we reached the “boat ramp” 2 tracks leading to the water with weeds growing up in the center of the ramp, obviously it didn’t get a lot to traffic. Without seeing bigfoot, I wouldn’t even mention it here except I kinda liked a picture I took there so I thought I would show it here.
Back out on the main road we continued on to Laughing Whitefish Falls. Leaving early this morning Mary took her coffee with her, nearing the falls the pavement ended and was full of potholes. It just so happens that once we on the pothole riddled road, this is where Mary decides to drink her coffee, as we bounced around I just looked over at her and shook my head as she attempts to get a drink of coffee. Nope I didn’t laugh at her:)
Well now let me tell you the falls area looked like it could have been in bigfoots backyard. And with the road being so rough, the only way I could figure where all the potholes came from is if bigfoot sneeks out at night with a shovel or a pick and digs them, I mean there was potholes within potholes, and side by side, it was IMPOSSIBLE to miss them, edge to edge of the road.
After bouncing around a mile or two we arrived at the falls, then, it was about a mile walk to the falls. Did I mention all the steps to get to the bottom of the falls?? Lots and lots of steps, at least this, was easier walking than than on the Dune Climb.
Note to idiot self, the next time you see a mom spraying down her kids with bug spray – you should do the same – the skeeters made several meals of us. I probably manages to kill 1 for every 4 or 5 that bite me, maybe one of these days I’ll learn—– then again. Oh yea, don’t forget the water toooo. Between the skeeters, heat and lack of a drink we were ready to get in the jeep and fire up the A/C.
Leaving the falls we decided to check out the town of Munising, this is where Pictured Rock is and the boat tours to view them and the sunken ships are located, we were there a couple of years ago so we didn’t do any of the sight seeing stuff, actually at this point in time we avoid crowds and anything indoors as much as possible, museums, enclosed boat rides, so the tours would have been out anyway. Which is why, sadly, we didn’t go to Mackinaw Island yet again. While I feel sorry for the owners and employees, it will probably be a year or more before we eat indoors at a restaurant. In the world according to Rex , anything indoors beyond necessary grocery shopping is a BAD IDEA because cases of the virus are going up in several states!! You hear people talking about waves of the virus, it’s my opinion that we are still in the first small ripple of a wave and a major tsunami is on the horizon along about August. Please stay safe.
At a scenic overlook, looking over Lake Superior, we had lunch, complete with freeze dried ice cream, from the local farmers market, then headed back home.
Saturday, the last day here it sprinkled most of the day so we didn’t do anything but read and watch DVD’s because our cell service was pretty poor, no big deal when we can get outside, kinda makes for a long day when stuck inside.
The end finally 🙂
