Say what?? Cash only!!
2/19/2020
We started the morning heading south in a foggy mist. We drove. about 30 miles south of St. Augustine FL, on the expressway, then cut over to the A1A that for the most part follows the ocean. On out first stop, which was on the ICW (The Intracoastal Waterway ) we chatted with a nice guy fishing. He gave us a few ideas that we might be interested in seeing.
While we were there we seen a couple of dolphins and Mary watched an Osprey grab a good sized fish and fly off with it. The fisherman told us that about 45 minutes before we got there a pod of dolphins swam by.
The restaurant he recommended was called O’Steen’s, They were opening the doors as we were getting out of the jeep, there was a line outside and we got the next to last table, this is at 11:00 as they were opening on a Wednesday. Needless to say there was several people waiting to be seated when we left. Mary and I both had shrimp, their speciality and they were delicious!!! Went to pay and guess what CASH ONLY…….. the fisherman told us this so we were prepared:)
Next stop was the St Augustine lighthouse, all 219 steps of it. I was concerned that with not walking much while we were in Indiana that it might be toooo much but we both made it to the top, where I’ll be able to walk tomorrow is another story.
Then again in St Augustine, next stop was the Castillo de San Marcos Monument, I’ve been wanting to see this fort for a while and sadly I was a little underwhelmed, it was ok, it’s extremely old, but for the $2.50 an hour parking, I’m glad we only paid for the 1 hour. To pay for parking you had to go this pay gizmo, key in your license plate number, insert credit card, and tell it how long your staying then walk back to your vehicle and display the stub in the windshield.
Northern bound, we made our last stop at Fort Caroline National Memorial, it’s a guess of what it looked like, constructed back in the 60’s(?) and it’s currently being rebuilt, and or repaired. It’s just a smallish triangle shaped earth works.
Over all it was a FANTASTIC 3/4 tank of gas day. For those of you stuck in the frozen North, I was thinking of you, but sure glad I’m not up north:)
Slight update:) while I didn’t get sore at all, Mary was sore & was for 3-4 days:(
