444 miles no stop signs or stop lights
No driveways, no billboards & no commercial vehicles
We drove the entire 444 miles of the Natchez Trace, it goes from Natchez MS to Nashville TN.
The trace runs through 3 states Mississippi, the upper west corner of Alabama and Tennessee. The speed limit is 50 mph for most of the way but there are a few curvy miles in TN where it’s 40.
There are a lot of historical markers along the way and several hiking trails, if you stopped at all the pull offs you’d never reach the end.
The entire drive is a 2 lane highway but no commercial traffic and no driveways, there is not a lot of traffic, at least at the end of March.
There are also 3 free campgrounds along the trace.
We stayed at all 3 of them and spent 2 nights at the northern most one, Meriwether Lewis. This is where he died (Meriwether Lewis 1774-1809) and is buried. On the full day at the CG we hiked a couple of miles and about a mile of it was the original trace. There are many places where the original trace is marked as you drive.
It’s a good drive provided you like to take it easy and slowdown. I’m glad we drove it and plan to drive at least parts of it again.
One of the short trails we stoped at was through a cypress swamp. Having never seen a cypress tree I thought it was interesting.
This is probably the last post until May.

Will miss your posts Rec but will resume reading in May…. Be safe and keep on exploring!
We’ll be in IN until after Easter, helping her mom
If you have time to read it, “Undaunted Courage” by Stephen Ambrose is about the Lewis & Clark expedition. A fascinating read; hard to put the book down.
Lewis committed suicide. It was speculated he had depression or some mental disorder. If I recall, it was speculated that he was in his highest element of personal engagement while on the expedition; looking for water route west. Maybe he came down off that ‘high’ and couldn’t cope with everyday life, Great book. That’s when men were men! Not to mention the importance of a woman, Sacagawea. She saved their butts. I’ve never been on the Natchez Tracel. I did eat breakfast at the Loveless Cafe once; at the foot of the trace. Many cyclists ride it; some go the distance.
I think he was murdered. 2 shots, one to the head and one to the gut.
