Grand Isle Louisiana
March 15 Island House, Grand Isle, LA
After 2 nights at Palmetto Island State Park we drove to Grand Isle LA. The drive was largely near water, some to the Chanels & rivers had large ships and barges in them and other smaller channels were lined with smaller boats. The entire area is FLAT and very near sea level, I don’t know if the water was salt water or fresh water or a combination of both. Most of the bridges were very tall to allow the large ships to pass under them.
The hurricane damage in that area is extensive and rebuilding in still ongoing. The Grand Isle State park on the island is still closed until further notice. The miles long beach looked in good shape and they had a tractor grooming it. It was easy to tell where the tractor had been the sand was soft and hard to walk on, where it had rained on the sand it was hard and easy to walk on.
The hurricane did extensive damage to buildings on the island, many houses are damaged beyond repair, others are just sitting there, I know some of the ones sitting there are waiting for organizations to come in and help with the rebuilding.
It was pretty cool while we were there so we didn’t try to carry our chairs to the beach. The beach was pretty clean with, very little debris washing up, I’m sure part of that was due to the wave breaks. They had a row of rocks out from the beach blocking the waves, gaps in the rocks allowed some waves to hit the beach also.
Watch me disappear.
