Fort Pickens Campground
Tuesday, November 29, 2022, made our escape or so we thought. We spent 2 cold nights at Tailwater Campground which is just below the dam on Barron River Lake, which is way way down. When we made the reservations we didn’t catch that they had turned off the electricity. Not a problem for staying 1 night in the cold but by the morning of the seconding night the battery is quite low.
As usual it’s seek and find until you get to the end
Then we drove a portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway as we made our way to Meriwether Lewis Campground, we have stayed here a few times.
From the Trace we worked our way down to Piney Grove Campground in Northern part of Mississippi where we had planned to sit tight while waiting for some parts to be delivered to an RV dealer in Nashville.
Piney Grove was the closest federal owned campground, that was open in the winter. Anyway, a couple of days later Mary’s mom ended up in the hospital so we went back to Southern Indiana.
SUNDAY, December 18, 2022, Mary’s mom is doing fine now, we had really planned to hang around a few more days but with her doing great and some SUPER ARTIC cold air on the way we decided it was time to hit the road again.
We abandoned the idea of having the warranty work done until after the first of the year so two 300+ mile days down I-65 most of the way, this found us in Fort Pickens Campground, its on Gulf Island National Seashore, which is just south to Pensacola FL.
Somewhere in the Northern part of Alabama there is a new Buc-ees gas station, I’m not sure how big this one was, but when we pulled in it and was super busy. We finally found an open lane to get fuel, we filled up on pump number 249. I don’t know how many pumps they have but past us were 6-10 more islands beyond the one I filled up at. They also had a pump for DEF in the center of all or most of the islands and those were numbered also, but it was sill the largest gas station by far that I have ever seen. Not only were most of the gas lanes busy, but the entire parking lot was full of parked cars for people inside. I just wish we had taken a couple of pictures. I’m thinking they were having some kind of grand opening special, but there were no banners or signs saying so.
The weather is expected to be less than ideal while we’re going to be here so I don’t know how much exploring we will get to do. But at least we’re going to be a little warmer than the frozen north. The lows are expected to be in the high teens and low 20’s for at least 3 nights with the highs only in the 30’s durning the day.
We made reservation s to stay until the 26th, after that we don’t know what we’re going to do.
The End
