Mini Road Trip
Tuesday, November 9, 2022 after 1,000,001 ( I counted them) Dr’s appointments we’re finally on a mini road trip, Mary wants to return for Thanksgiving, so we only have a couple of weeks. Anyway, the first stop of the mini adventure was at an RV dealer just outside of Nashville TN. The screen door needs to be replaced and the awning quit working and there was a recall on the electronic gizmo that handles the lights, and most everything else in the van. It’s problems covered under the warranty.
We knew ahead of time that this was just to identify the issues and we will need to return once they get parts in, if things go according to plan we’ll stop on our way south just after Thanksgiving.
After spending the night onsite they took the van bright and early the next morning, we were originally told they wanted it at 8:00, but by 7:30 it was in the shop and we were off exploring with the jeep. It was extremely easy to be ready then because of the recent time change and Nashville is on a different time from Floyds Knobs. We felt like we were 2 hours ahead of them.
We have the jeep with us this trip and this is pretty much the only reason we brought it, that and to see how it pulled up and down the hills of TN. It did fine on the expressway going up the hills, on the 2 lane roads the van slowed down a little more than I liked, but that might be my fault for not making it downshift.
I broke down and bought doughnuts, Donut Palace, for breakfast, not the best I’v ever had but they were the softest I have ever eaten, they were so soft they were hard to hold without squashing them.
So, we spent the day exploring a Civil War Battlefield, Stones River, on the outskirts of Murfreesboro TN. While the battlefield is just outside of town, most of the larger earthen fort called Fortress Rosecrans is now in town and mostly gone. Typical battlefield layout with plaques expanding what going on at the time……
More below.
We pulled out of the dealership around 2:00 and headed west aiming for Meriweather Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace Parkway. It’s a good thing we didn’t arrive much later as there were only 4 open sites and at least 2 others arrived after us.
Thursday, November 10, 2022 on our walk this morning we noticed that there were no empty spots, this for a weekday we thought that unusual. Of course the weather was great with temps in the low 80’s to high 70’s.
As usual more below
11/10/2022 _ Well, that didn’t go as planned.
So we drove 260 miles today with the intention to stay the night at a casino. It’s a wonder I didn’t get sunburned, most of it due west drive, had me in the direct sun. I’ll must say that it was probably the most uncomfortable drive we have done at least in the van. Being winter the sun is lower on the horizon it seemed that it was eye level and very bright and WARM! Windows up or down it didn’t matter.
Before we headed to the casino there was a museum and aquarium, on the Mississippi River, that we wanted to check out first. While it was open and there were a couple of people, they totally ignored us, setting up for what looked like a wedding, there was nobody else around. We hung around for a couple of minutes then decided to save our $14 each admission fee.
Quick change of plans we had just enough time before dark, it gets dark around 4:30 here, so instead of staying in the casino parking lot, we thought we would move on down the road to a rest stop. NO OVER NIGHT PARKING signs! So what to do now, fortunately there was another casino just down the road so we spent a quiet night in their parking lot.
I don’t know how many casinos are in this area, but there are a lot and they are large. I don’t know how they are staying in business, we’re in front of the hotel and there is literally not a car in the parking lot.
FYI we did donate some money in casino for allowing us to park here.
