Imagine a hill made of loose sand, the kind where it feels for every step up you take, you feel like your sliding back at least 1/2 the distance, more of a large sand hump instead of a sand dune. Now imagine a chilly wind pulling at your clothes and sand blowing around as you’r climbing the sand hill. Now for the fun part with the wind roaring around you carrying a cloth plane wing, and the wind trying to rip it out of your hands. If the wind jerks it out of your hands and it breaks, it could set you back days or weeks to make repairs, and today is a perfect day, you can feel it in your bones you are going to fly.
Thats only one of 3 or 4 trips you need to make to get the rest of your craft to the top, then assemble it with the wind trying to blow you off the hill. All the while your wondering if it’ll fly and will you live if you crash.
This may not be exactly how it happened as at least 1 of the gliders was carried to the top already assembled.
The hill was planted in grass to stabilize it back in 1929 so the monument could be built at the top. Below it a picture of what it looked like before being planted in grass.
