I fussed at a guy
Friday, October 7, this morning we drove to the town of New Bedford MA. We ended up passing through part of Rhode Island to get there. Upon arrival we lucked into an end street parking spot that was long enough for the van just across the street from the Museum.
The plan was to tour a whaling museum that we didn’t tour. On the National Park Service website it read as if it was part of the National Park Service but it’s not. Being part of the Park Service would have gotten us in for 1/2 price, at $19 each that would of been a great savings. So when we FINALLY found the visitors center, New Whaling National Historic Park, I fussed at the guy behind the counter about them advertising for a company on the NPS website, he kinda knew what I was saying, come to find out I was not the first person to lodge a complaint, apparently it’s a common complaint. Just on principal we did do the tour of the town but, it seemed like every other building was a museum, one could go broke just going through them.
We ended up just walking around the town. Not only are old brick and cobblestone hard to walk on they are very rough to drive on.
Lots of money was made in hunting for whales and killing them for their blubber to make whale oil. The practice all but wiped out the whales.
Then we debated on what to do next, we ended up looking for the Newport Tower, it’s in the city of Newport Rhode Island. Talk about nerve wracking, I had already determined that we wouldn’t be able to park the van, what I didn’t realize is it’s an older city with extra skinny streets with parking along all the streets with LOTS of people walking around both tourist and locals. The entire area was overflowing with parked cars and people. Mary snapped a few pictures as we drove by it.
It’s kinda famous because nobody knows when it was built, some say it was built by early colonist, perhaps as a windmill, others think is was built by the Templars long before Columbus discovered America.
Here are a few random pictures from the days adventure.
