It’s a good thing I wasn’t chewing gum!!
Friday, October 14 2022 it’s a good thing I wasn’t chewing gum!!
For our trek south before turning west, I wanted to drive over the Chesapeake Bridge, it goes over and under the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. From what I read on line, I thought the toll was going to be $13 but the lady at the toll booth asked if I had single or duel wheels in the back. I said duel, her response was that’ll be $21. If I had been chewing gum I probably would have choked to death on it.
The above water part was fine, 2 lane doing 55mph. You would think that if they are going to spend the money they would do it right. But no, the tunnel portion was 2 lane, that’s ok BUT they were very narrow meeting semi’s and trailers was NO fun!!! With it being a toll road, meaning money’s not a real issue, I don’t know why they didn’t make the lanes wide enough to meet a big truck without making new indentions in the steering wheel. I mean who’s non brilliant idea was that? Lets just say the tunnel was not relaxing and tested your nerve about keeping up speed. Ok I just looked it up, the 17.6 mile bridge/tunnel opened in 1964 to replace ferries that were in operation since the 1930’s.
Chesapeake Bay
On the 270 mile drive, Mary wanted to check out Fort Monore. It’s a large moated fort that sits on the southern edge of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. I should have known that it would be an interesting drive since located in Norfolk VA, where the large naval shipyard is. Anyway cars and construction everywhere, to get to the fort we had to get on the expressway, not just any ole expressway, this one has a tunnel also, but we had to stop and allow someone verify that the propane was turned off, crossing the Chesapeake Bay bridge I just had to turn it off myself, anyway this road wasn’t as bad as the other tunnel, both lanes were going the same direction, SLOW but we were moving. Afterwords Mary said she thought the ceiling was bowing down in the middle, I told her I didn’t notice I was to busy watching the road.
Fort Monroe, not what we expected. Many of the building and houses are still being lived in. None of the buildings were open except for the visitors center, which I had to drop Mary off, so she could get her passport book stamped, while I got turned around.
I guess several famous people lived or visited there over the years.
Then it was back through the tunnels again and on south.
The End
