And then we met a semi
10/20/2018
We left Deams Lake Friday morning headed for parts unknown. So ok, not really parts unknown. We have a weeks stay planned plus our 2 month winter destination.
First off was 64 west bound, I wanted to see how the MH handled the Jeep on the hills, after we loaded it up, it did just fine, then we cut down to western KY parkway and ended up spending the night just outside of Paducah KY.
Saturday morning we head out for some 2 lane adventure. Boy, I got a little more than I bargained for. We headed west out of Paducah on a 2 lane road headed for Cairo IL.
It was a moderate road with 55 MPH almost curvy and just a hint of a shoulder, overall it wasn’t to bad and not to much traffic but then we came to a bridge. Now this is not some modern bridge over the Ohio River. No, it’s old and narrow. By narrow I mean if I was on the motorcycle I would still call it very narrow.
It’s one of those arched bridges that you can’t see over until you reach the top.
Up we go, I’m watching to see that I’m not on the yellow lines and not going to loose a mirror on the side of the bridge. Whew made it.
Well that one was over the Ohio. Now here’s the Mighty Mississippi, same kind of bridge only longer. About 1/2 way to the top and my worst fears are realized——— A semi headed towards us. I slow down to about 15-20 MPH and have Mary guess how close the mirror is to the bridge, she says about 4 inches. We made it off safe and sound but I think the steering wheel has some new indentions.
On the other side, in Missouri, the road was kinda strange ride. I guess from big trucks and not so solid base. First one side then the other was low so you went down the road rocking side to side. I really didn’t care for the feel. Once we got to the expressway I abandoned the 2 lane idea for the rest of the day.
We drove around 226 Miles and were in 4 states.
