In search of waterfalls
Friday, September 8, 2022
For todays adventure we were off in search of waterfalls, well anyway after a few days bouncing around unsuccessfully moose hunting we needed to empty the tanks, there are only a limited number of places to do that around here. Dolly Copp is one of them, we had a choice to pay $10 to dump the tanks or pay $12.50 and spend the night on a non electric site which is what we did.
Taking off bright and early, Friday morning, we backtracked the way we came into the area the first time, arriving in the area. Things sure look a little different in bright sunshine instead of low dark ominous looking clouds threading rain any moment.
Our first stop was supposed to be the longer walk of the day, at .7 miles one way, first we had to find it, the signage in the entire area leaves much to be desired. We knew the trail head to Thompsons Falls was in the ski lodge parking area but we needed to ask an employee where the start of the trail was. Well anyway to make a short story long at about 1/2 way the trail crossed a creek with no bridge and no stones to cross on so we headed back to the van and moved down the road for falls #2.
This one had us walking up a fire road, it was only about a 15 minute walk, all up hill of course, to Crystal Cascade Falls, had we continued on for another 4 miles we could have walked to the top of Mount Washington. We met several people that were doing just that.
Down the road another 1/4 mile was Glen Ellis Falls. For this little adventure we had to walk through a tunnel under the road. Then the falls starts at the top and you walk down a significant number of steps to reach the bottom. The steps are all hand laid rocks each at different heights and size. Snap a few pictures then it’s back UP all those steps, we made it just fine.
We never found the other 2 of the 4 we intended to see, one was in a town, Jacksons falls with an active covered bridge that I realized we were heading for just in time to turn on another road (9.2ft and we are at least 10ft in height) to by pass the bridge.
