Our first Florida State Park
Let me start by refreshing your memory about Florida – Florida is HOT & HUMID!!! Now that that’s out of the way.
Tuesday, September 7th, 2021 Elevation 15. Temperature is still brain boiling hot with 1000010% humidity. We moved about 105 miles today.
We’re at Myakka River State Park, which is one of the largest & oldist state parks in hot & humid Florida. The sites are pretty large and level, this one has some shade. We’re here for 3 nights, it’s booked solid for the weekend, otherwise we may have stayed a little longer.
Once we got set up we went for a drive around the park, there is a fairly large lake in the park at around 1000 acres and the water is up, the roadway is the highest point around so the deer and birds are pretty much tame and ignore vehicles as they drive slowly by.
I feel the price is very misleading. This site was $26 online but by the time you add in all the other charges it came out to $39 a night, like I said, misleading.
This morning we took a boat tour, we were the only passengers on the boat, we didn’t get to see many animals or gators, since it’s so blasted HOT the gators are staying in the water where it’s cooler, they are out on the banks more in cooler weather soaking up the sunshine.
So anyway, after the boat ride and another drive through the park we headed for the Gulf of Mexico and the beach. It was slightly less HOT at the waters edge but heading back to the parking lot the heat returned quickly. We stopped at several of the beaches in the area.
Siesta Beach was busy, of course it’s voted the best beach in USA, I don’t know voted best by who, it’s a white sand beach, the sand is really fine, not as fine as I am, mind you, but it’s still pretty fine. It was much more solid too, not washing out from under your feet when a wave comes in, the other beaches the sand washed out from under your feet making walking difficult as the waves were retreating.
September 9, 2021. This morning we did a walk of about a mile with the first stop being the canopy walk, they have 2 wooden towers built in the woods with a swinging bridge between the 2 towers. The base of one of the towers was surrounded by water so we walked over and back, the dry tower also had a couple more stories up to get you well above the tree tops. From the ground I made it to the top without stopping, Mary stopped “to take several pictures” on the way up.
Then we walked on the nature trail, as we were circling back around to the parking lot the path was under water, it looked to be about calf deep and not very inviting we had to run around and retrace our steps – we didn’t fancy going hiking with gators nipping at our heels (LOL).
Later, after a brunch of biscuits and gravy we did another walk this was an old road bed leading back to where an old house was back in the early 1900’s, some lady bought 19000 acres and ran a ranch for about 8 years according to the plaque didn’t say why she quit ranching.
The road continued on but was no longer in the trees so we opted to return to the jeep. Before we turned around we met this couple who were kinda lost. We told them they were about 1/2 mile from the paved road. Once we got back to the jeep and a couple of miles down the road the couple were still walking, we gave each of them a bottle of water as they had nothing with them. I don’t know how far on the unpaved road/trail they walked but I’m guessing it was almost 4 miles from where we met them the first time back to their car. The last we saw of them a little later they looked to have been rejuvenated with the water.
BTW wild hogs are a nuisance animal and are being trapped, but I don’t think even the traps that were on dry land had even baited, in one you could see where pigs had rooted inside the trap.
Oh yea, Florida sure is flat HOT & MUGGY
The End

Just in caae you didn’t know this fun fact…. While in Flordia out walking, if you run across a gator and it attempts to chase you, DO NOT run in a straight line, it WILL catch you… Run then do a SHARP turn left or right and it will drop to the ground and give up the pursuit…. That’s what I’ve been told anyways… Never did try it but hey figured this is maybe something you can ask about …. Don’t reccomend trying it out without knowing for sure…. Stay safe and have fun.
I hope to never find out if it works or not
