The Plains of Colorado
July 16 2021
After the rain last night we packed up and were on the road around 7:45 this morning. We’re leaving the mostly comfortable days and nights of the last few days behind and heading east and down in elevation as we make our way back towards Southern Indiana and Floyds Knobs.
Wasn’t much to see except a whole lot of flat nothing, sometimes planted fields, but mostly flat nothing with a scattering of cows, we did pass a couple of massive feed lots, while the odor wasn’t toooo bad, I guess it was the fine dust, I sure was glad when we got past it.
Mary will fuss at me about this, but it sure was HOT today with a high of around 95, way to hot degrees, felt more like 195 to me.
In a rarity for us we made a stop with the Jeep in tow, we stopped at Bents Old Fort National Memorial. Even though it was starting to get warm it was a good stop and very informative. While the fort has obviously been rebuilt is was built over the old foundation.
More below
Once we made it to Lamar CO and got set up we then took the jeep up to the site of the Sand Creek Massacre National Site, where the army did a sneak attack on a Native American Village, essentially murdering a village of old men, women and children. Read more about it here.

Unfortunately it will never have very many visitors a day, Lamar, the biggest town around and other small towns don’t have much to offer, the site itself is way way out in the middle of no where. We drove 22 miles on this small county road with a speed limit of 65 then drove 8+ miles of gravel road with a speed limit of 55 and pass with care signs. There were a couple other roads in the mix but these were the more rememberable ones.
Hot and Miserable is how I would describe my day, flat ground, few if any trees bright sunshine and few clouds, but about dark some storms rolled in just north of here. We didn’t get any rain but had some wind and a good light show as heat lighting lit up the darkening sky.
Important Note: This might be the last post until we leave Southern Indiana sometime after August 16th.
